Growth Mode: KC Outsourcer Launches New Service, Leases Bigger Office

Posted on April 3rd, 2020

Kansas City-based e2E LLC moved into a larger office and is launching new fractional chief marketing officer outsourcing services.

Nancy McCullough, former CFO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, founded e2E in 2013. The company’s niche is helping entrepreneurs who typically don’t have the resources to hire full-time executives but still need the expertise to compete and grow.

When e2E started, it offered CFO and human resources officer services out of a 1,200-square-foot Crossroads Arts District office. The company grew to 23 employees — adding 10 in the past year — and needed more space. In November, it moved into a 4,000-square-foot office at 519 Southwest Blvd.

Now that extra space is helping e2E add marketing services.

“All the foundational things like finance and HR are important for success,” McCullough told the Kansas City Business Journal. “But it became evident that as we’ve been working with companies to help them get expenses under control and get their operations humming, the problem at that point was sales. They’re typically spending some money on marketing, but they don’t really have a strategy and aren’t intentional about it. What we want to bring to the table is the chief marketing officer — the person who helps you sit down and think about your spend and why you’re spending it the way you are. Is it the most strategic way to use those resources to grow your top line?”

“Throughout my career, clients would often come in and not really know who they are,” Baerg said. “They didn’t have a strategic plan for their marketing. The bottom line is if you don’t know who you are and where you’re going, how are you going to get there? We help them get there.”

e2E (entrepreneur to Enterprise) Recognized as Top 1/3 of Ingram’s Magazine Fastest Growing Companies

When Nancy McCullough set out almost seven years ago to start e2E, she had a specific mission in mind – to help companies grow. Now she finds herself in that same position with average annual revenue growth of 71.4% from 2015-2018.

“Our mission is simple; to help companies grow,” said McCullough, CEO of e2E and former CFO for the Kauffman Foundation. “There was a major market opportunity when I opened e2E to help startups, small businesses and nonprofits under 500 employees. Most of these organizations have limited senior management and the CEO takes on the responsibilities of accounting, payroll, HR and marketing. We’ve brought all of that together as a brain trust to serve these underserved organizations. That’s where e2E comes in.”

In a 2019 Small Business Trends & Statistics Report, Guidant Financial and LendingClub teamed up to survey more than 2,700 current and aspiring business owners nationwide. The top challenges for small business owners match the categories of e2E’s offerings. Among them: lack of capital/cash flow, marketing/advertising, recruiting/retention of employees, administrative work (bookkeeping and payroll), and managing benefits.

“Business has been good for e2E. Once clients understand our services and realize the critical strategic guidance we offer, they are anxious to get started to alleviate their pain points,” McCullough said.

That growth landed e2E on Ingram’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies, an honor McCullough is excited about. “We come from a genuine place of helping companies grow and to find ourselves making that list is an honor. We hope to continue to see clients be added to the ranks of Kansas City companies on the move. That’s great for the community as small business makes up 98% of the U.S. economy,” she continued.

e2E has also been honored as a Thinking Bigger Business Media’s 25 Under 25 recipient. McCullough was accepted into the Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program and she and her leadership team continue to mentor small businesses through their daily work.

McCullough continued, “Along our trajectory, we envision taking e2E to additional markets to continue to strengthen small business growth. However, that step will fall in line with our focused plan as we ourselves continue to grow and serve.”
